What is Dry Carpet Cleaning?
Dry Carpet Cleaning
Carpets can be cleaned using a dry method or a wet method. Just because we call it “dry” does not mean that there is not a small amount of water used in the process. The term comes from a method that is used to for upholstery cleaning or cleaning certain clothes made of specific materials that cannot handle the exposure to water. Unlike dry carpet cleaning, these methods of cleaning fabrics use solvents which can be harmful if inhaled. These types of chemicals can also damage carpets. When the term “dry cleaning” is used when talking about carpet cleaning, it generally refers to low moisture methods that are used to remove soil and dirt. The benefits include fast drying times and lower costs. The disadvantage is that there is no way to rinse out the detergent that is used in cleaning.
How does Dry Carpet Cleaning Work
There are three different dry cleaning methods that are typically used: dry foam, bonnet cleaning, or absorbent powder. Each of these has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. Basically, different types of cleaning agents are applied to the carpets. These agents will absorb various contaminants. Once they have absorbed into the contaminants then they are all vacuumed up. When there are areas that are heavily soiled, a special pre-spray may be used to help remove them.
Dry Foam Method
The dry foam method for carpet cleaning will use a cleaning solution that is whipped into a very light foam substance. Using rotating brushes, the carpet cleaning professional will work it into the carpet so that it can absorb the contaminants. By using a wet/dry vacuum, the foam will be extracted out carrying the contaminants with it. Dry foam cleaning is usually used an interim cleaning and is highly effective if used before a hot water extraction method.
Bonnet Cleaning Method
Bonnet cleaning can also be called absorbent pad carpet cleaning. It is very similar to the dry foam method except that instead of rotating brushes, the carpet cleaning professional places a large cotton bonnet on the carpet to be cleaned. It is sort of like using a very large towel or a mop to rub dirt out of the carpet. The bonnet has to be changed out frequently in order to remove the soil and dirt properly. This is a good choice for maintenance.
Absorbent Powder Method
This carpet cleaning technique is accomplished by spreading a moist powder over the carpet. The absorbent powder will dry and adhere to contaminants. Once it has dried, it will be vacuumed out of the carpet and the contaminants will be removed in the process. This is perhaps one of the least effective methods for cleaning carpet as it can leave a heavy residue since it is not rinsed.
Benefits of Dry Carpet Cleaning
The dry cleaning method has several benefits. For one, since there is very little moisture used, there is no need for a long wait for the carpet to dry. Most of the time there is no detergent actually used so the carpet does not have to be rinsed; and there is no soapy residue left behind. The only disadvantage to dry carpet cleaning is that it is not effective in killing dust mites, mold or bacteria.
