Child Friendly Carpet Cleaning
Child Friendly Carpet Cleaning
It is inevitable that carpets are going to get dirty. There are going to be spills, pets that have accidents, and people who forget to wipe their feet; and these are just for starters. Since we know that carpets are going to get dirty, we also know that they are going to have to be cleaned at some point. The trouble is that many of the substances used for carpet cleaning can be harmful for children as well as adults and pets. Spot removers in particular can be dangerous because they include solvents that are similar to the ones used in dry cleaning clothes. They can give off strong odors that are harmful as can many other kinds of carpet cleaners. There are some ways to keep carpets clean without putting children in danger.
Frequent Vacuuming
Vacuuming a couple times a week can help reduce the amount of dust mites which can be triggers for asthmatics or allergies. This will also help get rid of any surface dirt on the carpets before it gets ground in to the fibers. The best vacuum to use is one which uses a strong suction, has rotating brushes and a HEPA filter. This prevents dust or dirt from getting blown back into the room through the exhaust. Be sure to vacuum high traffic areas multiple times and clean thoroughly along the edges of the carpet since dust and dirt tend to accumulate in these areas.
Spills Will Happen
There will be spills no matter how careful you are. To ensure the carpet stays clean, blot the spill up as soon as it occurs, or it is discovered. Be sure to not rub the spill as this can damage the fibers of the carpet and end up spreading the stain. A solution of 1 cup of warm water with a half a teaspoon of mild liquid soap can be made that will remove most common stains caused by spills.
Cleaning Up Carpet Stains
There are some very safe, natural ways to clean up carpet stains without causing damage to children. Club soda can be used to remove red wine stains. Greasy stains can be cleaned up by sprinkling baking soda, corn meal or corn starch on the area and letting it stand for at least 6 hours. It can then be vacuumed up. To clean other stains mix 2/3 cup of warm water with 1/3 cup of vinegar. Apply the solution to the stain and then blot it up until the stain is gone.
Removing Odors
When a commercial carpet deodorizer is used the fumes can be harmful especially for children with asthma or allergies. Besides that, they do not always work to remove the odor but instead simply mask it with fragrances. To remove odors safely sprinkle baking soda over the surface of the carpets. Allow it to stand for about 15 to 30 minutes then vacuum it all up. This is a natural way to get rid of odors from the carpeted areas of the home.
